Severe Snowfall in Lahaul & Spiti Affects Roads
Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti districts are witnessing heavy snowfall, leading to thick layers of snow covering roads and houses. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more rain and snowfall in the northern hills over the next three to four days due to a fresh Western Disturbance.
Roadblocks and Transport Disruptions
The extreme weather conditions have paralyzed transportation across the state. Reports indicate that many vehicles were either trapped in sludge or washed away by flash floods in lower regions of Kullu district due to continuous torrential rain. Additionally, landslides have been reported in various parts of the state.
Over 500 Roads Blocked, Power Supply Affected
According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA):
- 583 roads, including five National Highways, are blocked due to snowfall.
- 279 water supply schemes have been impacted.
- 2,263 electricity transformers (DTRs) are out of service.
More Snowfall Expected Due to Western Disturbance
IMD Senior Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma attributed the sudden weather change to Western Disturbances, which became active on February 25 and continued until late last night. He predicted another heavy snowfall spell on March 3, particularly in Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul, and Spiti, while Kullu and Mandi will experience heavy rainfall.
Relief Expected from March 5
Despite the current weather crisis, IMD Scientist Dr. Soma Sen Roy forecasted an improvement in weather conditions from March 5. However, she warned of moderate thunderstorms in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh may experience heavy rain due to shifting easterly waves, impacting Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep.
Chief Minister’s Advisory to Residents
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu urged residents to stay away from rivers and streams amid worsening weather. He also advised people to follow government safety guidelines to avoid any risks during this period.
