Himachal Floods: Beas River Destroys Chandigarh-Manali Highway; Manali-Leh Route Blocked

Heavy Flooding Hits Himachal Pradesh

The Beas river has caused severe flooding, washing away large sections of the Chandigarh-Manali highway. Key tourist areas and businesses, including hotels and restaurants, have suffered significant damage.

Authorities have blocked the Manali-Leh highway at multiple points due to the river’s strong currents. Emergency measures are ongoing to ensure the safety of residents and travelers.

Highway Damage and Traffic Diversions

The Bindu Dhank stretch near Manali has completely disappeared under floodwaters. In Raison, parts of the highway have collapsed. Traffic is being diverted to a link road on the left bank of the Beas river.

At Vashisht Chowk, the river has swept away a portion of the Manali-Leh highway, causing complete blockage. The administration has evacuated shops and homes in nearby areas, including Green Tax Barrier, Alu Ground, and Dev Lok, a popular tourist destination.

Impact on Local Businesses and Residents

At least one restaurant near Manali has been washed away. Former Manali MLA Govind Singh Thakur visited the flood-affected areas to assess the damage and support relief efforts.

The Chandigarh-Manali highway remains closed near Pandoh in Mandi district, forcing commuters to spend nights inside vehicles or highway tunnels. Alternate routes, such as Mandi-Kamand-Kataula-Bajaura-Kullu, are also blocked.

Schools and Districts on Red Alert

The Himachal Pradesh Weather Department has issued a red alert, prompting closure of schools and educational institutions in districts like Kullu, Mandi, Kangra, Una, Shimla, and Bilaspur. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid travel until further notice.

Government Response and Relief Measures

Authorities are actively monitoring flood-affected areas and providing necessary support to displaced residents. Evacuation teams, emergency shelters, and traffic management units are deployed to ensure public safety.

The state government urges all citizens to follow official advisories and remain cautious during this severe weather event.
