Heavy Rains Flood Himachal Pradesh: Kullu-Mandi Devastated, Chandigarh-Manali Highway Blocked

Continuous heavy rains have battered Kullu and Mandi districts in Himachal Pradesh, causing major disruptions to daily life. Several rivers are swelling, raising alarm among residents and officials. Landslides and waterlogging have severely impacted road connectivity and essential services across the region.

Highway Blocked, Hundreds Stranded

The crucial Chandigarh–Manali National Highway is blocked at multiple locations due to falling rocks and mudslides. This has halted all vehicular traffic in both directions, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded. Authorities have strongly advised avoiding all non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Waterlogging and Displacement in Mandi

In Mandi’s Balh subdivision, low-lying areas are facing severe waterlogging. Floodwaters have entered homes and businesses, forcing residents to relocate to safer, elevated locations.

Widespread Infrastructure Damage

According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 309 roads including National Highway 305 (NH-305) are currently blocked by landslides and debris. Additionally, 236 water supply schemes and 113 power distribution transformers are out of service, disrupting essential utilities.

Mandi Worst Hit

Mandi has been the hardest hit, reporting multiple casualties due to rain-related road accidents. The district also recorded the most extensive infrastructure damage with 167 roads blocked, along with the highest number of affected water supply schemes (74) and power transformers (91). Neighboring districts Kangra, Kullu, Chamba, and Shimla have also reported casualties and significant damage from the ongoing weather crisis.

Other Key Affected Areas

Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba districts together account for the majority of road closures and utility breakdowns. The National Highway-505 in Lahaul-Spiti remains closed due to landslides and flash floods, cutting off critical access routes to the region.

Economic and Agricultural Losses

The SDMA report estimates the total damage to public infrastructure—including roads, power lines, water systems, healthcare facilities, and schools—at over ₹1714.95 crore. Moreover, more than 88,800 hectares of crops in agriculture and horticulture sectors have been destroyed, impacting local farmers heavily.

Authorities continue rescue and relief efforts as they monitor weather conditions and work towards restoring connectivity and essential services in the affected areas. Residents are urged to stay alert and follow official guidelines to stay safe during this challenging time.
